According to stories, it would have been a titan who had to carry the universe as punishment. Many famous mythological figures are said to have encountered him, such as Herakles and Perseus.

When meeting Herakles (who was working on the twelve labors), Atlas had to get some golden apples from his daughters' garden. Heracles would then carry heaven for him. But Atlas was smart enough not to take over the task anymore, Herakles was smarter and through a trick Atlas carried the universe again.

His encounter with Perseus was to his advantage. He had just beheaded Medusa and at Atlas' request, Perseus let Medusa look into Atlas' eyes so that he no longer had to bear the burden (figuratively).
